Sheikh Zayed Lab, Children's National Medical Center

Leach Wallace Associates provided professional engineering services for the fitout of 25,000 sf of shell space on the 6th floor of the main hospital for the development of a pediatric research lab.

The lab consisted of large open lab space with modular lab benches, laminar flow and fume hoods. Specialized equipment rooms with dedicated critical systems air conditioning were provided for lab freezers, hoods and other equipment. The remainder of the space is used for offices and conference rooms. The lab had a dedicated research IT server room with critical system air conditioning.

The project had a dedicated 35,000 custom rooftop air handling unit with heat recovery wheels, a dedicated critical systems chiller system and dedicated general and critical lab exhaust fans. The design integrated existing building electrical, chilled water and steam systems, as well as additional infrastructure to support this program. The project was certified as LEED Gold.
