Expansion, Renovation & New Medical Office Building, Carolinas Medical Center - Mercy
Leach Wallace Associates provided mechanical, electrical and plumbing design services for the new five-story (including basement) 140,000 SF medical office building (MOB) in the Carolinas Medical Center-Mercy Complex. Included was the infill of the covered plaza from the basement level to the bottom of the fourth floor level patient floors of the administration/patient south wing and the renovation of approximately 26,500 SF of first floor space in the existing hospital.
The renovations included converting the existing pharmacy and lung center on the first floor to surgery staff, doctor's lockers and lounges, and a pre-op and recovery unit. The lobby, administration, registration, gift shop and chapel were renovated and expanded into the infill new construction. The infill expansion provided space for an expanded surgery waiting and the pre-op and post anesthesia recovery unit (PACU). The new MOB provided space for hospital use on the basement and first floor and also provided tenant space on the second through fourth floors. The basement space includes the pharmacy, central sterile supply, cadaver lab and mechanical and electrical equipment rooms. The first floor provides space for six current and six future operating rooms and associated support space.
